La definizione di democrazia del grande filosofo Renè Guènon

Una magistrale definizione di democrazia da parte di un'intellettuale che aveva capito tutto! il grande filosofo francese Renè Guènon (1886-1951)

Se la parola "democrazia" è definita come il popolo che governa se stesso, allora esprime un'impossibilità assoluta e addirittura non può avere un'esistenza di fatto nel nostro come in qualsiasi altro tempo

Uno dovrebbe stare in guardia dall'essere confuso dal significato delle parole: è contraddittorio dire che la stessa persona possa essere al tempo stesso governatore e governato, perchè, usando la terminologia Aristotelica, lo stessa non può essere "in azione" e "in potenza" nello stesso tempo e nella stessa relazione (nello stesso spazio)

La relazione tra governatore e governato necessita la presenza di due termini : non ci possono essere governati se non ci sono anche dei governatori, anche se questi fossero illegittimi e non avessero altro potere se non la loro stessa pretesa;

ma la grande abilità di questi in controllo del mondo moderno consiste nel far si che il popolo creda che si governi da sè; ed il popolo è sempre incline a credere questo perchè è lusingato da ciò, e, perchè, in ogni caso, non è capace di una sufficiente riflessione per vederne l'impossibilità

E' per creare quest'illusione che il suffragio universale fù inventato; le leggi si suppone siano prodotte dalla maggioranza, ma quello che è nascosto è che l'opinione è qualcosa che può facilmente essere guidato e manipolato

E' sempre stato possibile, con i giusti suggerimenti, di stimolare, come desiderato, il movimento della corrente in quella o quell'altra direzione...

If the word 'democracy' is defined as the government of the people
by themselves, it expresses an absolute impossibility and cannot
even have a mere de facto existence-in our time or in any other.

One must guard against being misled by words: it is contradictory
to say that the same persons can be at the same time rulers and
ruled, because, to use Aristotelian terminology, the same being cannot
be 'in act' and 'in potency' at the same time and in the same
relationship. 

The relationship of ruler and ruled necessitates the
presence of two terms: there can be no ruled if there are not also
rulers, even though these be illegitimate and have no other title to
power than their own pretensions;
but the great ability of those who are in control in the modern world lies in making the people believe that they are governing themselves; and the people are the more inclined to believe this as they are flattered by it, and as, in any case, they are incapable of sufficient reflection to see its impossibility. 

It was to create this illusion that 'universal suffrage' was invented: the
law is supposed to be made by the opinion of the majority, but what
is overlooked is that this opinion is something that can very easily
be guided and modified;

 it is always possible, by means of suitable
suggestions, to arouse, as may be desired, currents moving in this or
that direction...
